Troubled Hungarian Qualifying for Williams

Nico in fifteenth
By Andrew Hooper August 2 2008
For the Williams team it would be a troubled qualifying session for the 2008 Hungarian GP. Kazuki Nakajima would not make it past Q1 while Nico was not able to take to the track in Q2 due to a problem with his car. Nico and Kazuki would finish the session in 15th and 17th positions. Sunday's race is again going to be a difficult time for the Williams pair as they look for a points scoring finish.

 Hungarian GP Qualifying

Qualifying for the 2008 Hungarian Grand Prix would get underway with ten drivers taking to the track, both Williams drivers amongst them. The first time would go to Vettel with a 1m:21.464. Coulthard was second followed by Rosberg and Fisichella. Glock would move ahead of Vettel with a 1m:20.258. Bourdais would put in a quick lap seeing him in second. Kazuki's first lap would see him in third,
1m:21.405. Further drivers had taken to the track with thirteen minutes remaining.

RosbergKovalainen was now fastest with a 1m:20.156. Massa was in third behind Glock. Raikkonen was in fourth, 1m:20.530. Piquet would move into fifth. Everyone would be pushed down one place as Hamilton went fastest with a 1m:19.376. Kazuki was now in eighth and Nico twelfth. The bottom five drivers not making it into Q2. Massa was on the softer tyre and Raikkonen the harder tyre, along with Hamilton. Trulli would jump into third with a 1m:19.993. Kovalainen would improve with a 1m:19.945 but remained in second. Both Kazuki and Nico had pitted but were now back out on the track with nine minutes remaining. Kazuki was currently in tenth and Nico fourteenth.

Webber had moved into seventh behind Glock. Eighth was Coulthard followed by Alonso. Both Kazuki and Nico were on the softer tyre as they dropped to fifteenth and seventeenth. The top five were all in their pits as Bourdais moved into ninth. This would become tenth as Kubica moved into eighth. Both Kazuki and Nico would pit again both now in seventeenth and eighteenth. There was just five minutes remaining. Both of the Ferrari's were back out running on the softer tyre. The Williams drivers were again in trouble as the final minutes counted down.

Only a handful of drivers were out on the track. Now everyone was coming back out including both of the Williams cars. Only the two McLarens remained in the pit lane. Massa would improve to be second, 1m:19.578. Kubica would improve to be in sixth, 1m:20.053. The Ferrari's would pit as Vettel moved into seventh. Nico would improve to ne in thirteenth, 1m:20.748. He would drop to fourteenth as the period came to an end. Kazuki was down in sixteenth having improved his time, 1m:21.085, but was out of qualifying. Trulli was now third with a 1m:19.942.

Those not making the cut were Heidfeld, Kazuki, Barrichello, Fisichella, and Sutil. The order at the top was Hamilton from Massa, Trulli, Kovalainen, Glock, Raikkonen, Kubica, Webber, Vettel, and Alonso in tenth. It was not much of a surprise to see Kazuki out so early and it would be a major surprise to see Nico make it past Q2.

NakajimaQ2 would start with Glock the first driver out, joined by Raikkonen. Nico was saying that the harder of the two tyre types was the better to get them through to Q3. Trulli and both Renault's were also out on the track. Glock would set the first time with a 1m:19.246. Glock was on the harder tyre. Raikkonen was second with a 1m:19.622. Nico was still in his pit with ten minutes remaining. Only three drivers were not out on the circuit. Glock would pit along with Raikkonen. Trulli was third with a 1m:19.666. Alonso was fourth and Piquet fifth. Coulthard would move into fifth and Kovalainen in third. Hamilton's first lap would see him in second with a 1m:19.473. Hamilton was on the softer tyre.

But Massa would jump to the top of the times with a 1m:19.068, running on the harder tyre. Nico was still in his pit with six minutes left. He and Kubica had yet to set a time. Kubica would come out on the softer tyre. Massa would pit while Kubica moved up to seventh, 1m:19.776.

Under four minutes to go and Nico was still in his pit. Massa was leading from Glock, Hamilton, Raikkonen, Kovalainen, Trulli, Kubica, Alonso, Webber, and in tenth Vettel. It looked like Nico was going to make only one single run late in the period. Kovalainen would improve from fifth to fourth, 1m:19.480. But Nico would be seen getting out of his car, not making an attempt to set a time. It was later found that Nico had an hydraulic problem with his car. So we would see Nico and Kazuki start from fifteenth and seventeenth come Sunday's race. Vettel would improve from tenth to ninth.

Kubica was in seventh and Piquet improved to ninth. But Webber would push Piquet to tenth, the Red Bull driver taking ninth. Trulli was now ahead of Raikkonen and in fifth, 1m:19.486. With the end of the period those not making the cut were Vettel, Button, Coulthard, Bourdais, and Nico. The top ten was Massa followed by Glock, Hamilton, Kovalainen, Trulli, Raikkonen, Kubica, Alonso, Webber, and Piquet.

The final ten minute period in qualifying would get underway with McLaren again looking to dominate proceedings. The period would see the Toyota's of Trulli and Glock out first followed by the rest of the ten cars. Glock would set an early time of 1m:23.326 while Kubica moved into third behind Trulli. But it would be Hamilton who would move to the top of the times. Glock was second followed by Massa, Raikkonen, Webber, Trulli, Kubica, Alonso, Kovalainen, and Piquet.

With everyone setting a time they would all make their pit stops with the harder tyre been the most common selection.  As the period came to an end the drivers would complete their final runs with Kubica moving into second. But Kovalainen would move past the BMW driver and into second with a 1m:21.140. Team-mate Hamilton would improve his time slightly to see him finish the period fastest with a 1m:20.899. Massa would finish in third followed by Kubica, Glock, Raikkonen, Webber, Trulli, and Piquet.

For the Williams team qualifying was a difficult time but the performances of the two drivers was not unexpected. Sunday's race will again see the team looking to use strategy to maybe secure a few points come the end of the race.

I read it was a hydraulics problem for Nico, but the team is working on it and expects the car to be ready for the race.
