No Go For McLaren's Engine Fin
By Sam Cooper July 15 2008
With half the F1 field using radical new engine fins, in this weekends German Grand Prix, the Vodafone McLaren Mercedes formula one team have decided not to use their version of the engine fin, even though the team saw some encouraging signs from the test.

Autosport recently discovered that the McLaren team do not want to run the new engine cover, as the car could be badly affected during crosswinds, something that could cause the car to spear off the track into retirement, something McLaren could do without.

"Maybe Hockenheim is not the best place to try this new wing and we need to see if it is affected by crosswinds," said Kovalainen. "It was quite windy at the Hockenheim test, but we didn't seem to be too affected by the wind. It's definitely encouraging for the future."

The teams first chance to observe the conditions for this weekend will come on Friday, where teams won't be wanting to waste setup time, as there hasn't been a F1 race there since 2006.

On another note, the threat of rain for this weekends Grand Prix is currently at 35%, though this is likely to change before the race weekend starts.
