Normal service was resumed at the top of the timesheets in Valencia this afternoon as Kimi Raikkonen secured the fastest lap time of 1m39.477 in the dying seconds of the second free practise session.
It had looked like home grown hero Alonso would complete the day in first place as he used the soft tyre on a late run out until the Finn’s Ferrari went 0.2s faster than the Renault.
Honda had a good afternoon too with Button finishing a highly respectable third.
With ten minutes remaining Massa was leading the field but the three top runners pushed him down to fourth after the Brazilian had become the first driver to get a time under the 1m40’s in Valencia.
The McLarens spent most of the session off the pace of their main rivals and neither Hamilton nor Kovalainen were able to better the job that was done by Ferrari this afternoon and had to settle for fifth and sixth respectively.
While the Ferraris were busy trading top times throughout much of the second half of the session there were a few spins happening around them. Piquet had several offs before he finally pulled it together enough to finish the session in ninth.
Rosberg had the most spectacular spin of the session though. He lost his FW30 under braking, resulting in his car swapping ends on him and he narrowly missed the Red Bull of Mark Webber who was just about to start a fast lap when the Williams flew past him and into the escape road.
