Jarno advises Toyota to go for Alonso
By Luke Marc Carlile-Stanton October 4 2007
After spending one and half seasons as team mates at Renault, Toyota driver Jarno Trulli has advised the Toyota team to try and hire reigning World Champion Fernando Alonso should he decide to leave the Mclaren-Mercedes team at the end of this season.

Alonso won back-to-back titles for Renault in the years of 2005 and 2006 but left at the end of last season to join the Mclaren team for this season for his title defence of 2007.

However, Alonso has very publicly stated that he is not happy with the Mclaren team and has made not so subtle hints that he would like to leave the team for next Season despite having two years on his contract left to run.

Alonso has been linked with moves back to his old team Renault but also (and most suprisingly) Ferrari as well. But the news this week that Ralf Schumacher will be leaving the Toyota team at the end of this season, there is a gap to be filled alongside Jarno Trulli for next year.

Toyota have the seat available and also the money to hire the youngest Double World Champion in the sports history. And with Jarno and Fernando also very good friends, Jarno has advised the team to make a lunge for the World Champion.

"Yes, it's true. I told the bosses: if you want a good, fast, reliable driver, there is Fernando," Jarno told Italian Publication 'Gazzetta dello Sport.'

But with Toyota's current form there is doubt that Alonso would even consider a switch to Toyota. However, Jarno believes hiring Alonso would be a good move for Toyota.

"It was a bit of a provocation but I would be happy if he came over, even though I don't know if he would. To have such a champion would give Toyota an idea of where they are and would sweep away many doubts." he said.

When asked about Ralf Schumacher's depature from the team Jarno admitted that he was not very suprised about the announcement made on Monday.

"It was in the air. I've always had a fair relationship with him, even though Ralf doesn't talk to anyone,"

Spyker driver Adrian Sutil and BMW-Sauber tester and new GP2 Champion Timo Glock have also been linked with the vacant Toyota seat.
