Hockenheim Session1: Kubica crashes in the rain
By BMW Sauber F1 Team July 18 2008
In the first practice session for the German Grand Prix at Hockenheim, the BMW Sauber F1 Team drivers had to cope with mixed conditions. In the end, Nick Heidfeld finished eighth, while Robert Kubica was left stranded in the gravel and had to settle for finishing 19th.

The German GP weekend started on a wet track and under overcast skies, but the conditions improved throughout the 90 minute session. Robert was the only BMW Sauber F1 Team driver to go out in the opening stages when the track was damp, Nick opting to wait until the track was mainly dry.

The German proved to be competitive throughout the session. On his way to preparing for the remainder of the weekend, he completed two long-runs totalling 20 laps. He set a personal best time of 1:16.719 minutes to finish 8th on the time sheets.

For Robert, however, things didn't run that well. With about 20 minutes remaining, the Pole went out for his second stint. But on the third lap of run he went over a painted white line that was still wet, spun at almost 200kph, skidded over the gravel and hit the tyre wall, albeit lightly, but damaging his front suspension. Therefore, his 1:18.779 minute lap time proved to be his quickest and he had to settle for finishing 19th.

The fastest time of the session (1:15.537 minutes) was set by McLaren's Lewis Hamilton.

The second session (14:00hrs CEST, 12:00hrs BST) is also expected to be held in changeable conditions, thus making the preparation work for the BMW Sauber F1 Team drivers and their opponents rather difficult. At the same time, spectators can look forward to another action-packed 90 minute session.
