Canada: Hamilton takes madien pole
By SA07 June 10 2007
Lewis Hamilton continued to rewrite the history books as today he took his maiden pole in front of the Canadian crowd. Celebrations were nearly cut short as Alonso was going faster but an unusual mistake from Alonso cost him his 16th pole of his career and took second place. Nick Heidfeld showed Bmws strong pace and elevated himself to 3rd place while neither Ferrari had an answer to McLaren.

McLaren looked smooth and in control today as they again locked out the front row for the Canadian Grand Prix but today was a different story as it was not Alonso on pole but his rookie team mate. Nick Heidfeld again put in a strong performance for Bmw but will the team get the strategy right? Kimi Raikkonen qualifies 4th looking for a better weekend to start the fire back into his championship while Felipe Massa will start 5th being out paced by his media mugged team mate.

Webber puts on a strong performance for Red Bull in 6th and hails the teams pace but will he finish a race this time? Nico Rosberg transfers his Friday pace into 7th on the grid with Kubica in 8th having a much quieter afternoon after missing out on valuable set up time on Friday. Giancarlo Fisichella will start 9th giving hope that at least one of the Renault cars might score a point, with Jarno Trulli 10th putting in a good effort considering both Toyota drivers were not allowed to ride the kerbs at turn 8 due to a suspension problem.

Our very own Takuma Sato will start 11th place putting in a strong effort and out pacing the factory Honda team. Tonio Liuzzi puts the STR in 12th which proves we may have a faster car than the red bull juniors. Rubens Barrichello has a tough qualifying session in 13th after tripping up on the marbles.  David Coulthard puts the red bull in 14th having a tough session having numerous offs on track due to his brakes "crabbing". Jenson Button gets out paced by his team mate for the fourth consecutive race in 15th after a lack of grip and Scott Speed qualifies 16th.

Anthony Davidson has a disappointing qualifying session for us in 17th thanks to graining on his rear tyres and the red flag which caught Super Aguri out. Ralf Schumacher will only add petrol to the medias fire after qualifying in 18th way down the order once again and Alex Wurz puts in an unspectacular performance for his 10th anniversary of f1 in 19th place. Adrian Sutil out performed his experienced team mate in 20th place while Albers will start 21st while Hekki Kovalienen endures a tough weekend after taking his rear wing off after carrying too much speed through turn four and having an engine penalty which occurred in Saturday warm-up.

Takuma Sato

"I am pleased with the result and we are in a very good position for the race tomorrow. We were expecting to have a tough weekend in Canada as our circumstances make it difficult to fully update the car as much as we would like to. However, we made good progress during the practice sessions and a good step forward once again, so I am pleased that the car showed good performance and that it all came together today. Hopefully we can have a strong race tomorrow."

Anthony Davidson

"It was a difficult Q1 after the Red Flag and I think it made everyone change their plans very quickly. We got one run in, but I think that a lot of the other teams got two runs in and that was always going to make it extremely tight. I think we both drove a good lap for only doing one quick run. I got rear graining as well on my tyres for the last half of the lap and that's where all my time disappeared to. I think that without the graining I would have easily made it through to Q2. I was 5/10ths up on my time from this morning and I was really happy with my times, but when I got round to Turn 10 it all fell away and I ended the lap on a 17.5 and that's a real shame."

Graham Taylor, Sporting Director

"The Red Flag during Q1 set us on the back foot a little bit this afternoon, but we recovered well I think to get the cars out at the right time. Unfortunately for Anthony we weren't able to set a good enough lap time to get him through to Q2, missing out by a thousandth of a second. It is disappointing because his Sector 1 and Sector 2 times looked more than capable of getting us through to the next round. Taku did not have a great run, but it was good enough to get us through to Q2 where, with a structured plan, we could perform at our rightful place. He completed a good lap to put himself P11 on the grid and give us the best option for strategy for tomorrow."
