Profile: Enrique Bernoldi
By Andrew Cutler June 4 2008
Like many other drivers, Enrique Bernoldi's career path has been a varied one, showing his williness to go wherever he could find an open seat. A former driver for the now-defunct Arrows F1 squad, the twenty-nine year old Brazilian is currently a rookie in the IndyCar Series.

Bernoldi came up through the Brazilian karting scene, winning championships in '89, '90 7 '91 before moving on to Europe & car racing. Still just a teenager, he won the Formula Renault Eurocup Series championship in 1996. For '97 he switched to the Formula 3 Series, winning once and finishing on the podium six times. In '98 Enrique would finish 2nd in the British Formula 3 Championship, notching six victories.

For 1999 & 2000 Bernoldi would step up to the F3000 Series with the Red Bull Junior team. He also did some testing with the Sauber F1 team, but failed to secure a drive with them.  He would secure a spot with the Arrows team for 2001, and spent the next year & 2/3rds driving for them. He matched up reasonably well with teammate Jos Verstoppen in '01, and had a best finish of 8th in Germany. In '02, however, Enrique struggled to match the pace of his new teammate, Heinz-Harold Frentzen, and he was released before the season was over.

In 2003 Bernoldi moved to the Formula Nissan World Series, winning the final two events of the season. He would finish 3rd in the series championship in 2004, notching two more victories. He also landed a spot on the BAR Honda F1 team as a test driver, which lasted through the 2005 season.

For 2006 Bernoldi moved back to South America to ponder his future racing options. He ran one race in the Argintine TC2000 Series & tested for a seat in CCWS with the Rocketsports team. 2007 would find him in the StockCar Brasil series, finishing on the podium twice in eleven races.

Shortly after the announced merger of IndyCar and CCWS in February of 2008, Bernoldi was tabbed to be one of the drivers for Conquest Racing, one of the former CCWS squads that was making the jump to the unified series.
