Starting out in karting at age 11, Tomas captured the South African karting championship in 1995. By 1997 he was racing in the South African Formula Ford series, where he won twice. For '98 he was off to Europe to jion the British Vauxhaull Junior series, where he captured one pole, one win & Rookie of the Year honors.
In 1999 Tomas moved up to the Formula Opel Eurosereis, where he re-wrote the record books, notching eight poles & eight wins in a single season. He ended the year with a two-race stint in the Formula Nissan championship where, despite being new, he captured one pole & one win.
2000 would be another busy year for Schekter, who ran a full season in the British Formula 3 series, claiming two poles & two victories & finishing third overall in the championship. He also drove in the Marlboro Masters F3 race at Zandervoort, finshing third, and the final four events on the FIA Formula 3000 Championship, finshing second once.
Tomas landed a testing position with the Jaguar F1 squad for 2001, but was released before the year's end due to a run-in with police. He would compete in the Formula Nissan series that year, notching eight poles and four wins & finishing second in the championship.
For 2002 Schekter came across the Atlantic to try his hand in the IndyCar Series, driving the second car for owner/driver Eddie Cheever's team. Tomas quickly developed a reputation for being a talented but undisciplined driver, wrecking his boss in his first race, and crashing late in the '02 Indy 500 after having dominated most of the event. Despite winning at Michigan later that year, Cheever didn't renew his contract at season's end.
Moving over to Ganassi Racing for '03, Tomas posted five top-five finshes, but also wrecked alot of cars, and was left to search for another ride at the end of the year. He landed at Panther racing for '04, and would stay with them for the following year as well, posting three poles & a win at Texas in '05. Later that year he would compete in three rounds of the A1GP series, driving for South Africa.
Moving over to Vision Racing for '06 & '07, Tomas struggled to keep pace with the top-tier squads, and only posted 4 top-five finishes during his time there. For 2008 he signed on with Luczo Dragon Racing, a part-time squad running a six race schedule. Despite impressive qualifying efforts, his race-day luck was horrible, and he ended all events prematurely due to either mechanical gremlins or crashes.
Tomas was released by Luczo Dragon at season's end. As of yet, he has no ride lined up for 2009.
