The affable Brazilian, who is trying to chase down Scott Dixon in the championship race, will start from the pole. His Austalian teammate, who has already won twice this year, will be on the outside of Row One. "This pole definitely tastes sweeter than the others because of what happened (with the fire)", Castroneves said afterwards. "They turned the page. They kept going. They worked many, many hours. They brought a spare car back from Charlotte along with spare pieces. And the result just showed. We really worked hard, we really wanted it and the good news is it paid off."

The Firestone Indy Lights Series ran the first of their two support races at Sonoma prior to the IndyCar Series qualifying session. Frenchman Franck Perera led the event from flag to flag. The points race tightened up, with Raphael Matos currently holding a one point advantage over Richard Antinucci. The second Lights race will be held on Sunday, prior to the IndyCar event.
