End Of The Road
By Andrew Cutler October 11 2008
Real-estate developer turned racer Marty Roth has appearantly called an end to his days behind the wheel: Or, if the rumor is to be believed, he has been forced to "retire" by the IRL. Whichever is the case, what IS certian is that his equipment is on the auction block.

Roth Racing is trying to unload four Dallara/Hondas and the two tractor-trailers needed to haul them. The asking price is reported to be at least two million U.S. dollars.

Marty, who turns 50 in December, raced motorbikes and in several junior formula car series through the late 1980s before leaving it all behind to oversee his real-estate business back home in Canada. He returned to the Indy Lights (called Indy Pro at the time) Series in 2002, and began making limited appearances in the IndyCar Series in 2004.

By the time that the 2008 season came around, Roth had put togeather a sponsorship package that he hoped would allow him to run a two car squad all season long. Lackluster results soon had the sponsors looking for the exits, and Roth would be forced to "bench" rookie driver Jay Howard in favor of John Andretti, who came with sponsorship backing, for a few races. Howard would see action one more time, at Watkins Glen, but Roth would drive the car for the balance of the schedule.

Although he put in a few suprising qualifying efforts on ovals, his race-day performances were less than impressive, and he often ended his day crashed against the barriers. Thus, the rumor has it that, during the weekend of the regular season-ending Chicagoland race, the IRL sat Marty down and told him that he would be welcome back in 2009 as a team owner only.

If this is so, then the sale would indicate that Roth was not willing to accept those terms. If no such conversation took place, then it seems that he has simply decided that it is time to move on.
