Williams show some pace in second Friday practice

Nico Rosberg in fourth
By Andrew Hooper July 4 2008
The AT&T Williams teams drivers would show some pace in the second Friday practice for the 2008 British Grand Prix. Nico Rosberg would finish in fourth while team-mate Kazuki Nakajima was in a respectable ninth after having finsihed in a disapponting sixteenth in the morning session. The big question is whether they will they be able to turn Friday's efforts into a good performance on Saturday?

 British GP Friday 2nd Practice

With the announcement that the British Grand Prix would be moving from Silverstone to Donning ton as of 2010 the second Friday practice for the 2008 British Grand Prix would get underway. Nico Rosberg and Kazuki Nakajima had
finished the first session in tenth and sixteenth respectively. Fastest was Massa with a 1m:19.575 but his car was still been repaired after his accident at Stowe corner.

RosbergFirst out was Fisichella and Glock. They were followed by others including both BMW's. Glock would set a time of 1m:22.840 while Fisichella moved into second. Both Nico and Kazuki were out on the track and Nico would set the
early pace going fastest with a 1m:22.108 beating Kubica's time of 1m:22.639. But Kovalainen would go faster with a 1m:21.843 seeing Nico and Kazuki second and third. The order was Kovalainen, Rosberg, Nakajima, Kubica, Trulli, Piquet and Coulthard.

But Nico would move ahead of the McLaren as the times improved, 1m:21.532. Nico's time was set on the softer tyre. Hamilton, on the harder tyre, was now fastest from Nico with a 1m:21.282. Neither Ferrari had taken to the track.
Kovalainen was now second as Hamilton took to the grass at Club. Nico was in an encouraging third.

Nico would split the McLaren's moving into second, running on the softer tyre, after setting an identical time to that of Hamilton. Fisichella was now fourth fastest. Several other drivers were on the softer tyre, including Barrichello who moved into third. With his engine replaced and on the softer tyre Alonso was now seventh with a 1m:21.723. Heidfeld would move into fifth with a 1m:21.453. Glock's Toyota would stop beyond the exit of Club, with the Toyota driver saying that he could not get any gears. Hamilton would return to the track running on the softer tyre.

NakajimaWith close to thirty minutes of the session run Webber would move to the top of the times with a 1m:21.246, but Vettel would move ahead of the Red Bull. The order was Vettel, Webber, Hamilton, Rosberg, and Coulthard moving into
fifth. Hamilton's first lap on those soft tyres was a 1m:21.028, seeing him second quickest. Team-mate Kovalainen would go fastest running on the soft rubber with a 1m:20.353. Barrichello was now fourth with a 1m:21.199. Honda team-mate Button was now in sixth with a time of 1m:21.280. Both drivers were on the softer tyre. Button would improve to now be in fourth. With forty five minutes of the session run Massa was finally able to take to the track for an installation lap. Both Nico and Kazuki were out on the softer tyre and Nico would set a time of 1m:20.748 to go second quickest. Kazuki was now in fifth behind Button.

With just over thirty minutes remaining Kovalainen was back out on the softer tyres and would again move to the top of the times with a 1m:19.989. Massa was out on the track running on the harder tyres as he tried to make up time after his accident. Another driver to join Massa in having a crash was Trulli. The Toyota driver would crash at Stowe. He was able to get put of his car. His rear wing was some distance back up the track appearing to indicate that it had come adrift from the car causing Trulli's accident. The Toyota-powered Williams of Kazuki would join his Toyota brother as he was to spin his Williams into the barriers with 20 minutes remaining. Kazuki would run wide on the exit of the Abbey chicane and went back across the track into the opposite wall. Nakajima damaged both
his front wing and suspension, but was able to nurse the car back to the pits. Webber was now in third running on
the softer tyre.

Massa would have a moment at Becketts taking to the grass while running on the softer tyre. With the final ten minutes coming up most drivers were back in their pits getting ready for their final runs. Raikkonen was down in eleventh with a 1m:21.275. Webber would improve his time, running on the softer tyre, with a 1m:20.520 moving him into second. Hamilton would go third fastest with a 1m:20.543. With the end of the session Coulthard would set a time that would see him improve to be fourth, 1m:20.589. Nico and Kazuki would finish the session both in the top ten, setting times that were close to those set in the recent test session that the team conducted. For Kazuki his time was an improvement over his best in testing which was a 1m:20.985. Nico would complete forty three laps in the session.

Both drivers had put in strong performances in the session but will they be able to turn that into a good performance on Saturday?
